Run the Year 2016

Sometimes purchases and decisions made at 2:00 AM aren’t a bad thing.

Especially when they involve your fitness and health, something that you’ll carry around for decades.

I’ve been a very independent runner the last three years. I’ll train for a race, run it, bask in its awesomeness, then slack off like crazy until the next one (which were few and far between due to being in grad school). My body went through these major yo-yos of being fit and kinda ripped, then losing it all once I stopped training for something, and I’d have to go back through the process of building myself back up again. Trust me, it gets tiring, and becomes taxing psychologically: What if I hadn’t stopped? Where would I be now if I maintained the discipline I had at the beginning? Why do I let myself succumb to the temptations of society (i.e. delicious drinks, tasty treats, and way too much Netflix) when I know damn well I felt amazing when I wasn’t consuming them?

Not this time. Not in 2016.

I’ve decided to kick my fitness regime up a notch by running 2,016 miles in 2016. This is the equivalent to 5.5 miles/day or 77 marathons. I’ve hit a point where I want (and need) to be more consistent with my athleticism, so why not go all out? This desire and strive for consistency will be my mantra for the year, and I’m happy to bring you all along for the journey and to keep myself accountable for doing this!

(Also, I don’t really have any excuses as to why I can’t do this: I’ve already graduated, so I’m not fighting comps or projects or fraternity business. I’m job hunting/figuring out what I want to do with my life, so maybe fitness/running will have a huge part to play in that decision. I’m still living with the ‘rents and Sports Dog at the Casa de Awesome in a little town where there’s nothing much to do, and I don’t want to be tethered to the bed all day. What really struck me the most, though, was watching many runner friends post their yearly mileage on Twitter during New Year’s, and seeing this is giving me the kick in the ass I so desperately need–I didn’t even keep track of my miles, and I kinda wanted to jump in on the fun…but I hardly had any miles to speak of. So that’s going to change.)

I look foward to completing this challenge! Anyone else striving for quadruple digits of mileage in 2016? What are your 2016 running/fitness goals?

I like the 2,016 mileage goal! Imagine if everyone ran that in a year, what a healthy society we would be! I never thought to calculate my miles per year but I guess since I log most of them in my Believe Journal I could just tally them up. Good luck on finding your work and run path this year! Running a marathon 10 days into the year is a darn good start. 🙂

sounds like an amazing challenge. It sounds a little overwhelming to me, but is something to think about each time I walk a few miles.
